| Traditionally, the bride would gracefully waltz with her
father for the "First Dance": after a few moments the groom
would "cut in" or the groom and his mother might join the
bride and her father on the dance floor. A common
contemporary practice is for the bride and groom to dance
the "First Dance" to an entire song. Afterwards, the
bride and her father will dance.
Today, there is not
any set rule as to when the "First Dance" will take
place or which dance the bride and groom will dance.
This decision is made by the couple. However, many
couples find it convenient to dance immediately after they
have been announced at the reception.
When selecting your music and type of dance (waltz,
rumba, etc), consider what you both will enjoy and the mood
you would like to create, whether it be romantic or
upbeat.
Once a couple has made the decision to make dancing a
special part of their wedding day, we suggest taking
lessons. Dance lessons will help you appear poised, feel more confident during your "First Dance" and create
fond memories for years to come.
